The Trionda: Made in Sialkot, Played Across a Continent

The official match ball of the 2026 FIFA World Cup — hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada — is the Adidas Trionda. Its name, drawn from Spanish, means "three waves," a nod to the tournament's three host nations. But before it ever touched a pitch in North America, the Trionda began its life on a factory floor in Sialkot, Punjab — Sunny's own home city, and the base of World News Service.

The ball is manufactured by Forward Sports, a Sialkot-based sporting goods company founded in 1991 by civil engineer Khawaja Masood Akhtar. What started as a 50-employee operation has grown into one of the world's most trusted football manufacturers, now producing roughly 20.5 million balls a year — about 1.5 million every month.

Four World Cups, One City

The Trionda is not a one-off. Forward Sports has now produced the official match ball for four consecutive FIFA World Cups:

• 2014 (Brazil): Adidas Brazuca — Forward Sports' first World Cup match ball, produced after Adidas's original Chinese supplier could not meet demand
• 2018 (Russia): Adidas Telstar 18 — introduced thermo-bonded panels and an NFC chip
• 2022 (Qatar): Adidas Al Rihla — Forward Sports supplied 35% of over 300,000 match balls, manufacturing 5.5 million balls in total including training and replica versions
• 2026 (USA/Mexico/Canada): Adidas Trionda — a four-panel design with a 500Hz motion sensor supporting semi-automated offside and VAR decisions

Why Sialkot?

Sialkot's connection to football manufacturing stretches back decades, rooted in the city's tradition of skilled hand-stitching. Reports place Sialkot's share of global football production at around 70% of all footballs made worldwide. Adidas has sourced World Cup match balls from the city since the 1982 tournament in Spain, when the Tango España — the first water-resistant World Cup ball — was produced there.

In 2013, Adidas transferred thermo-bonded ball technology to Forward Sports, moving the city's production beyond traditional stitching and toward the high-performance construction now required for tournament-grade match balls. That shift — built by local engineers who reportedly designed the production and testing equipment themselves — set up the run of four consecutive World Cup contracts that followed.

A City Present on Every Pitch — Without a Team on the Field

Pakistan has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup. Yet since 1982, a Sialkot-made ball has been present at nearly every match of nearly every tournament — an unusual distinction for a country where cricket, not football, dominates public attention. For Sialkot's football manufacturing cluster — which also produces gloves, kits and other sporting goods alongside the city's well-known surgical instrument exports — the Trionda represents the latest chapter in a quietly remarkable global export story.
